Important changes to planning law are taking effect as the Planning and Development Act 2024 is being commenced on a phased basis.

Clanbrassil Street & St Nicholas’ Quarter, Dundalk, Co Louth

The scheme transformed the historic centre of the town by reconfiguring it as a pedestrian-friendly public realm with natural stone footways and traffic calming features. The first phase in Clanbrassil St has been completed and Louth County Council are starting on the second phase in St. Nicholas’ Quarter in 2022.

The project comprised the provision of wider granite footpaths, asphalt parking bays, planting and seating areas, an upgrading of public lighting, improved pedestrian crossings and a decluttering of footpaths.

The scheme has been a catalyst for the redevelopment of existing buildings along the street, and the recent painting of shop fronts has complemented the rejuvenation scheme.

This re-invigoration of the town centre is an excellent example of how important European funding is to our country and our region, and how it can directly benefit towns and local communities.
